| Makerfield Drive | |
| This is the name of one of the new roads on the Willow Park estate off Vista Road. It commemorates the former name of our town, Newton-in-Makerfield. This was its name up to l939, when it was officially changed to Newton-le-Willows. Makerfield appears to have been an Anglo-Saxon administrative area of great size, which as their names tell us, included Ashton and Ince. The word Makerfield appears to be a combination of a Celtic or Old Welsh word meaning a ruin and the Saxon for a plain, but no-one has been able to locate the ruin referred to. There is another possibility. There were cases of ignorance leading to the repetition of a placename description by the Saxon invaders, e.g. in the case of Pendle, which means "hill hill". Since an old form of Makerfield is Maserfield, the first part of the name may derive from the Welsh for a field or a plain, maes. | |
| Highmarsh Crescent | |
| This another of the streets on the Willow Park
estate. Highmarsh Lane was once the name of the Newton section of Vista Road. Originally
Vista Road was the name of just the built-up part of the Haydock section. The two sections
were not originally linked together, except by a narrow footpath, but when they were,
towards the end of the l9th century, Vista Road became the name of the whole route.Lorem
