ST HELENS WRITERS’ CLUB (established Oct 1971)

Contrary to common belief a Writers' Club is not a. school. It is a place where everyone learns something at each meeting from the pooling of knowledge and experience of other members.

We meet on alternate Wednesday evenings and anyone interested is invited to attend a meeting before they consider enrolling for membership. This ensures that the club is really what they are looking for.

On enrolment - at the second meeting attended - the fee is £7.00 per annum. Anyone joining after the end of September - and after the Poetry competition entries have been received - will pay £3.50 only for that particular year.

Tea/coffee and biscuits are served at a cost of 30p. There is no charge for these refreshments for invited guests or for any potential member while attending a first meeting.

For half the meetings of the year there is a set topic but it is not obligatory to write on this topic as members may be otherwise involved. Obviously, if someone is writing a novel he/she would not want to put it aside in order to write on something of no interest to him/her. The topics which can be loosely interpreted - are merely there for members who are stuck for ideas.

At the meetings, members read out their work which can be in any form, i.e., short story; poetry; article or whatever happens to be the writer's particular genre. This procedure is the norm with or without a topic. Members bring along work they are dissatisfied with. There is a fault somewhere - but where? It is amazing how others can spot a fault and put the writer on the right road.

Advice is given on markets; editors; publishers; etc., but no pressure is put on anyone who writes simply for their own pleasure.

We visit other Writers' Clubs in and around the area and have visits from them, We have guest speakers and are often invited to hear speakers at other clubs.

We receive details of week long, weekend or day Writers' Seminars and; literary festivals; national/international competitions and much more.

Each year the club has four competitions : Short Story; Poetry; Humour and Article.

We also have a social side. January sees members meeting at a local restaurant for dinner and in the summer we either meet again for dinner or to make up a coach party to visit some place of literary/historical interest.
